Synopsis
The theme of the book is the role that faith (belief in God) can play in individual lives. The plot focuses on three characters who spend one year together in college. The two male characters are best friends while in college. One of them (Chuck) was raised as a Christian by his grandmother (who was an excessively devout true believer) but ultimately lost his faith and became a committed atheist. The other (Chris) was the son of a minister who zealously sought to follow his father’s path in the ministry. He has the faith of a true believer. The third character (Stacy) is the story’s “common man” in that she has the casual faith that many self-proclaimed Christians have (i.e., she “believes” in God, but doesn’t give the subject much thought in her daily life). Chuck falls in love with Stacy and she with him, until she falls out of love with him and realizes that she really loves Chris, who has loved her in silence until she rejects Chuck. Chris and Stacy marry after she learns she is pregnant with Chuck’s child. All three then lead separate lives until they finally re-unite in the book’s epilogue.
